Smaug is the main antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit, not The Lord of the Rings. He is a large, fearsome fire-drake who conquered the Dwarf kingdom of Erebor, the Lonely Mountain and its treasure hoard. After being driven from their home, a company of dwarves, aided by Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf, quests to reclaim it. Smaug is eventually slain by Bard the Bowman of Lake-town, who exploits a weak spot in the dragon's armour.

Smaug is considered the last of the "great" fire-drakes of Middle-earth's Third Age. He attacked Erebor 171 years before the events of The Hobbit, killing the king and hoarding the immense treasure within the mountain. He also destroyed the nearby city of Dale.

Although Smaug is seemingly invulnerable, his underbelly was crusted with gems and gold from sleeping on his hoard. This left a small, unprotected patch over his left breast, which Bard the Bowman discovered with the help of a thrush.

Smaug, enraged by the theft of a single cup, attacked Lake-town to destroy it. Bard, using a special black arrow, struck the weak spot, killing the dragon. His death was a pivotal moment that led to the Battle of the Five Armies over the recovered treasure.
