The Elves of Mirkwood, also known as Silvan Elves, are a woodland-dwelling people who live in the Woodland Realm in the forest of Mirkwood, ruled by King Thranduil. Originally Silvan Elves who settled after their journey westward, their realm was later joined by a minority of Sindarin Elves led by Thranduil's father, Oropher. They are known for being skilled craftsmen, but by the Third Age, the shadow of Sauron had made them more isolated and wary, leading them to be less worldly than other Elves.

The kingdom was established in the Second Age and was initially more focused in the southern part of the forest. Oropher was the first king and his son Thranduil took over after Oropher was killed in the War of the Last Alliance. Thranduil is the King of the Woodland Realm and father of Legolas. His kingdom was the only one left with a king by the late Third Age. Galion served as Thranduil's butler.
The Mirkwood Elves were distrustful of Dwarves, a feeling that became evident when Bilbo's company was captured in The Hobbit.
Their craftsmanship is often perceived as "magic" by others. For example, their cloaks are given to the dwarves in The Hobbit, and the elves see this as a natural skill, not magic. They are known for their skills in woodcraft and living in harmony with their forest home. The forest was originally called "Greenwood the Great," but after Sauron's influence spread, it became known as "Mirkwood". This shadow caused the elves to become more isolated and distrustful of outsiders.
