RACES OF MEN

There is only one biological "race" of Men (humans), who developed into various cultural and ethnic groups across Middle-earth. These groups can be broadly categorized by their allegiance during the War of the Ring.

Aligned with the Free Peoples of the West
  • Dúnedain: Known as the Men of the West, they were the descendants of the Númenóreans who survived the sinking of their island kingdom and founded the realms of Arnor (in the North) and Gondor (in the South). Aragorn was the chieftain of the Northern Dúnedain (Rangers).
  • Men of Gondor: Inhabitants of the primary Southern kingdom of the Dúnedain, they defended Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring. Their Númenórean blood had intermingled with other men over the ages, though the ruling line maintained their ancestry.
  • Rohirrim: The famed horsemen of Rohan, located north of Gondor. They were Northmen, descendants of the Éothéod from Rhovanion, and key allies to Gondor.
  • Northmen: A general term for various groups of men related to the Edain who did not go to Númenor. This includes the Men of Dale and Lake-town (seen in The Hobbit), the Beornings, and the Woodmen of Mirkwood.
  • Bree-landers: Simple, rustic people living in villages like Bree, largely descended from pre-Númenórean Middle Men and isolated from the major conflicts of Middle-earth.
  • Drúedain (Woses): A reclusive, primitive people of the Drúadan Forest, south of Rohan, who aided the Rohirrim in reaching the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Allied with Sauron
  • Easterlings: Diverse peoples from the vast lands of Rhûn (the East) who were long-standing enemies of Gondor and the Northmen. Specific groups included the Wainriders and the Balchoth, known for using war-wagons and chariots.
  • Haradrim (Southrons): Men from Harad (the South) known for their dark skin and use of war elephants (Mûmakil) in battle against Gondor.
  • Corsairs of Umbar: Rebels from the southern coastal city of Umbar, a former Númenórean colony, who became pirates and harassed Gondor's coasts with their fleet.
  • Black Númenóreans: Descendants of those Númenóreans who became corrupted by Sauron and remained hostile to the Faithful (Dúnedain) after Númenor's fall. The Mouth of Sauron was a Black Númenórean.
  • Variags of Khand: A mysterious group of men from the land of Khand, southeast of Mordor, who appeared as vassals in Sauron's armies.
  • Dunlendings: "Wild Men" of Dunland who were enemies of the Rohirrim and largely served Saruman during the War of the Ring.

Other Groups
  • The Dead Men of Dunharrow (Oathbreakers): Spirits of Men from the Mountains who had broken an oath to Isildur to fight Sauron. They were cursed to remain as ghosts until Aragorn released them after they fulfilled their oath.
  • Lossoth (Snowmen of Forochel): A secretive people living in the far north of Middle-earth, generally keeping to themselves, though they offered some aid to the Northern Dúnedain.
