The Haradrim were the various peoples of the southlands of Middle-earth who served as antagonists for Gondor and allied with Sauron during the War of the Ring. They are also known as the Southrons and consisted of different ethnicities with a variety of cultures, including those with brown skin from Near Harad and those with black skin from Far Harad, some of whom are described as being large as "half-trolls". They are famous for their use of giant battle beasts called mûmakil and are described with distinct features, such as scarlet tunics and black hair braided with gold.

Most Haradrim were hostile to the Dúnedain of Gondor, viewing them as oppressors. ​They were a fearsome force, famously employing the mûmakil (or Oliphaunts) in battle and wearing distinctive scarlet and gold armor and banners. Following Sauron's defeat, many Haradrim were pardoned and allowed to remain a free people, though they were required to give up certain territories.
