The Lord of the Rings are a short, human-like race with a love for peace, comfort and good food, living in the rural region of the Shire. Key hobbit characters in the books include Frodo Baggins, Samwise "Sam" Gamgee, Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck and Peregrin "Pippin" Took, who are primary figures in the quest to destroy the One Ring. Other notable hobbits include Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist of The Hobbit, and Gollum, who was once a hobbit named Sméagol.

The Hobbits are about two to four feet tall, with curly hair on their heads and tough, leathery-soled feet that allow them to go barefoot.  They are typically farmers and gardeners who enjoy the comforts of home, good food, and celebrations. Hobbits are known for their ability to move quickly and silently, as well as having sharp eyesight and excellent hearing. They are generally described as peaceful, good-natured, and somewhat simple, though they possess great courage and resilience when called upon.
