Battles 462AD
Aesc the Jute of Caer Lundein was ordered by his father, Magister Militum Hengist of Ceint, to lead an assault on Caer Celemion. He was ordered to take both settlements & subdue the State to Jutish rule. Aesc attempted a surprise attack on Silchester, but when this failed began to besiege the city. The city was defended by its Aedile Lucius. However, by week end, Lucius realised that no aid was coming & fled the city with his family, companions & all mobile Core troops. Once Lucius had fled, the city fell to Aesc. He allowed his men to butcher some citizens, Core soldiers, and all the clergy without mercy. The other troops surrendered to the Jutes and joined their ranks. A great victory for the Jutes.
Commander Arthur of Caer Gloui, led his large, allied army into South Pengwern with orders to attempted to capture Worcester and South Pengwern. However, a surprise attack failed, and Arthur set ready to besiege the city. However, by the end of the first week, the City Councillors were forced by the population to cede the city to the Roman Commander, having one attempt made to storm the walls. The City Councillors opened the gates and surrendered the city to Arthur and thereby joining Ambrosius Aurelianus confederation of Roman States.
Once Silchester had been secured by Aesc, he ordered Thegn Milter to lead the assault on Greenham. The surprise attack failed, so Milter prepared his army to besiege the city. Knowing that Aedile Lucius had fled into the city, due to his flag flying on the battlements, the Jutes prepared for an aggressive attack. Lucius, seeing the size of the force against the city, once again fled with his family, companions and his two commanders, Briscus and Johannes. By week end, having seen their lord once again flee, the City Councillors surrendered the city to Milter, hoping that the Jutes would not sack the city as they had heard they did in Silchester. However, this was not Hengist’s way and once again the Jutish allied army butchered many civilians, all Core troops and all clergy found in the city. The Garrison troops surrendered and joined the Jutish host. Another great victory for the Jutes.
Ambrosius having learnt of the fall of Silchester by an allied army of Jutes & Saxons, sent orders to his General Arthur, who was besieging Worcester, to march to the defence of his ally Aedile Lucius as soon as he had secured Worcester. Arthur arrived too late though to save Greenham, as both settlements in Caer Celemion had fallen to the Jutish sieges. However, Arthur, once he arrived, intercepted the Jutish relief force travelling from Greenham to assist Silchester. The Jutish Thegn Milter, leading the force, then received orders from Aesc, to retire. However, as he was in marching column on the trackway, his force was caught and apart from the two leaders, Woden Priests and most of the core Heavy Infantry units, the rest were either destroyed or surrendered, having been deserted by their commanders and surrounded by the victorious Roman forces. A stalemate then ensued with Arthur not being able to attack either Silchester or Greenham, with enemy in his rear, whichever settlement he tried to assault.
King Cynfarch Oer of North Rheged led a daring looting & pillaging raid into Bernaccia, with its objective aimed at the Bernaccian villages around the gold mine sited at Leadshall Estate. Having been spotted with his mixed mounted foot and cavalry force crossing the border into Bernaccia, Cynfarch was unchallenged until after his successful attack on the village around the Gold Mine Fort. Here he was confronted by a mixed mounted foot and cavalry force from Bernaccia, under its King Morcant Bulc. A fierce battle ensued with heavy losses on each side, until finally the Prince of Bernaccia, Coleduac reached the garrison and called them out to attack the rear of Rheged’s allied army. Once Cynfrach saw his ally, King Clinoch of Alt Clut captured, he called the retreat. A brave defence by King Morcant Bulc, whose kingdom has come under sustained attack during 462AD.
